Congratulations to CHPA member Maj. Gen. Ronald K. "Andy" Andreson, USA (ret) was inducted into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame on Tuesday, June 11, 2007 during the Army Aviation Association of America’s Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.
His citation reads:
“Major General Ronald K. "Andy" Andreson, a Master Army Aviator, shaped the future modernization of Army aviation through dedicated application of visionary leadership and management skills. His two tours in Vietnam included command of the 162nd Assault Helicopter Company and numerous awards and decorations. Subsequently he commanded the 13th Combat Aviation Battalion and later served as Deputy Brigade Commander (Logistics) of the 6th Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat). This operational experience set a solid foundation for future distinguished service, including key acquisition management positions in the Advanced Attack Helicopter Program Office and at Headquarters, Department of the Army. His most senior assignments included Program Manager for the Black Hawk and Comanche helicopter programs, and Deputy Commanding General for Research and Development at AVSCOM. General Andreson’s superb leadership resulted in near flawless fielding of Black Hawk. Influenced by his outstanding performance, Congress approved Black Hawk for award of the first multi-year procurement contract for any DoD program, saving the Army more than $100 million. Subsequently he led the highly successful transition of the Comanche through concept exploration into development. His selection as the best Program Manager in the Army and later recognition with the Secretary of Defense Superior Management Award provide clear evidence of his distinctive leadership and management skills. His service as a major aviation systems Program Manager for a total of eleven years is significantly longer than any other PM in the history of the Defense Department. He stands alone as the acquisition manager who had the greatest positive, profound, and enduring impact on Army aviation modernization to this date. General Andreson’s sustained selfless dedication and exemplary performance of duty resulted in the award of the Distinguished Service Medal.”
Brief Biography
General Andreson's most recent assignment in the Army was as Program Manager, RAH-66 Comanche helicopter program, the Army's highest priority and largest planned acquisition. He successfully planned, directed and controlled the allocation and utilization of all resources for the $35 billion program.
As Deputy Commanding General for Research and Development at the Army Aviation Systems Command, General Andreson supervised all assigned project managers and laboratory directors and successfully transitioned two major programs (Kiowa Warrior and CH-47D) from development into production.
During a preceding assignment, he was the Program Manager, Black Hawk helicopter program. During this period, he gained Congressional approval and implemented the first DoD multiyear contracts for the helicopter and its T700 engine. He was selected to be the recipient of both the Army and DoD Program Manager of the Year awards.
General Andreson is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and holds a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech. He is also a graduate of the Army War College and the Raytheon Advanced Management Program.
